“Blue & White” Showcase at Goose Creek Studio
by Alyssa Mattson*
Goose Creek Studio will be featuring the paintings of Bedford artist Beulah Witt in “Blue & White”, her third solo exhibition of her work, during the month of March. The exhibit will open on 2nd Friday, March 10, 5-8 pm.
Fondly known as the “Oldest Artist in Bedford”, Beulah Witt is a native of Bedford, Virginia, having been born and raised in the county of Bedford and living in various areas around town since she was a teenager. While she had always been artistic, she worked at Piedmont Label Company her entire professional career, and she and her husband raised their three sons and enjoyed much time spent with their eight grandchildren. When she retired, she saw the perfect opportunity to get back to her first love - painting. Since then, Witt has been painting for about 20 years, and is very prolific and active in the local art community.
Working primarily with watercolor, Witt displays her talents by painting seemingly anything - people, houses, animals, flowers - you name it, and she will attempt to paint it. The variety of her work shows an expression of her creativity. Witt also brings a unique perspective to her artwork given her age. While she claims her art hasn’t changed much over the years, she is “amazed by the details” she can still manage, as well as her steady hand, despite being 84 years old. For this particular collection, Witt showcases all new work in a limited palette of blue and white, consisting mostly of animals.
Beulah loves her studio in Goose Creek Studio’s 2nd floor Old Jail Hill Art Space where she is generally available four days a week. She enjoys doing commissions as well as teaching watercolor. Visitors are always welcome to her studio, so feel free to stop by and see her.
Goose Creek Studio and Custom Framing is located at 302 Court Street in Bedford. For more information, see or call (540) 586-8482.
