March 04, 2019

The Virginia Health Care Foundation is holding a SignUpNow workshop on March 19th at Liberty University (how to help people apply for Medicaid, including the new adult coverage, as well as Medicaid for Children).  We often look to local partners to help promote our workshops. I wonder if you might be willing to take a few minutes to share the information below with your grantees or community partners?
Under the new Medicaid coverage for adults, Virginians ages 19 – 64 with incomes up to 138% FPL may be eligible (individual:  $17,237 ; household of 3:  $29,436). Virginia’s health insurance programs for children cover kids in households up to 205% of the FPL ($43,727 for a family of 3).
Tuesday, March 19
10 am – 3 pm
Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Room 1047)
306 Liberty View Lane
Lynchburg, VA 24502

The workshop is free, as is parking. Lunch will be provided.
Human services organizations, like the food bank, housing and homeless services providers, domestic violence services, child and family support agencies, schools, area agencies on aging, job training, schools, child/family service agencies, area agencies on aging, health department, CSB, home visiting, Goodwill/Salvation Army and the like are great targets for potential attendees.

The Good News and The Bad News

The Good News: Just over half of Virginians newly eligible for Medicaid are enrolled (233,000+)!

The Bad News: There are still about 200,000 Virginians who are eligible for coverage, but not yet enrolled.

Also, some folks who were enrolled automatically (Plan First or GAP enrollees) or via a Fast Track method (SNAP beneficiaries and parents of children covered by FAMIS Plus) may need to renew their coverage soon. Their renewal dates didn't change, even though their coverage did.

The experience of other states with Medicaid expansion tells us that many newly eligible adults will need 1:1 assistance to apply for or renew their coverage.

Please help us get the word out about SignUpNow trainings within your organization and in your community! SignUpNow workshops teach the "ins and outs" of the eligibility requirements, application (and renewal) procedures, and post-enrollment information for Virginia's Medicaid and FAMIS programs.

We will need "all hands on deck" to help everyone who is eligible apply or renew.

If you, or others in your organization, attended a SignUpNow training during the last few months, please share this announcement with staff and volunteers at organizations in your area that interact with newly-eligible adults (housing assistance, churches, food banks, job training, tax assistance, correctional facilities, cooperative extension offices, mental health agencies, employers), so they can find out how to help their clients and employees get enrolled.

Check out to find a workshop near you. New training dates are added to the 2019 schedule often, so check back regularly!
SignUpNow is an initiative of the Virginia Health Care Foundation.
More Good News: Income Guidelines Updated for 2019!
The Income Guidelines for Virginia's Health Insurance Programs for Families & Children have increased with the release of the new Federal Poverty Levels.
The new figures are effective January 11, 2019. The 2019 income chart for the new adult coverage, as well as FAMIS, FAMIS Plus, FAMIS MOMS, Medicaid for Pregnant Women, and Plan First is here.
