The grand unveiling for the Peaks of Otter Winery’s Love Sign is Saturday July 1st 2017 at 3 PM. We spent over a year in the design and making of this work of art and it shows! Created to represent all aspects of Johnson’s Orchards and Peaks of Otter Winery.

We couldn’t think of a more appropriate place to put a LOVE sign than on our six generation family farm, that wouldn’t be here if not for love. The love of a man for a woman, a mother for her child, and the love for mother nature and a simpler way of life.

It all started when Jason Johnson met Jennie, together their love story began on The Johnson Farm, what is now mile marker 86 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  One of their children, Robert marred Rhowena and had 10 children. In 1918 Robert and son, Elmo bought some land down the mountain to start an apple orchard. Elmo married Freddie and started their own family. Elmo’s love for Freddie was rivalled only by his love for this land. Their business grew and so did their family. They were married 64 years had four children, leaving the farm to Danny Johnson, their youngest son.

Danny met Nancy at school in 1955. Danny instantly knew he had met his match. A woman just as strong and as passionate as he was. They were married in 1960, had two children, Chip and Shannon. They have worked together, side by side for 50+ years and you can still catch Danny giving a longing gaze in Nancy’s direction. As the years went by, their children have had children and now their grandsons Jordon  and Joshua take care of most everything around the orchard and winery. Danny and Nancy still have final say about everything though!

Jordon and his wife Lindsey are busy raising the next generation of Johnsons, with four boys growing like weeds, I’d say they’ll be in the orchard helping soon.
Joshua met his girlfriend Christy at work, following the example set by Danny and Nancy on how to build love along with a business. They are each other’s muse and are responsible for the creation of our LOVE sign.

At almost 8ft tall, the L in our Love makes our sign one of the largest in Virginia. The rest of it makes it one of the most interesting.

Join us for a celebration of Love in the Blue Ridge.
