Milestone Birthday at Hickory Hill Vineyards Leads to Special Donation to Bedford Domestic Violence Services

Moneta, VA 9/1/17 — To celebrate her milestone 50th birthday, Wendy Furrow-Scott of Hickory Hill Vineyards decided to collect 50 donations for Bedford Domestic Violence Services (BVDS). The response was overwhelming, with friends and winery patrons donating nearly 250 items!

Furrow-Scott shared a list of BDVS’ greatest needs and collected donations at Sunset Saturday events held at the winery. People donated laundry detergent, dryer sheets, trash bags, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and even laundry baskets. More than $500 in monetary donations were also collected.

“The donations will help to restock our cabinets for our shelter clients and emergency walk-in clients who need personal care items,” said Lisa Bailey, client services advocate for Bedford Domestic Violence Services. “Our clients sometimes face uncertain economic needs while dealing with a domestic violence episode and rely on BDVS to help to replenish those items that we sometimes would take for granted in our everyday lives.”

Hickory Hill Vineyards has partnered with BDVS in the past, providing auction items for their fundraising. They were very impressed by how well BDVS helps local people in need. So, collecting donations seemed like the perfect way to celebrate a milestone birthday, Furrow-Scott said.

The donations provided to BDVS will be distributed to all who are in need at the time of service. Federal, state and local grants provides for day to day administrative costs for staff and general operation of BDVS. Ongoing services, which include clothing, personal products, transportation, housing assistance, and other transitional services, are funded by the Bedford Domestic Violence Coalition, a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. The coalition receives funding through various fundraising activities, local grants, and donations and is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Anyone who would like to help Bedford Domestic Violence Services can contact the office at 540-587-0970. Donations and volunteers are always needed.
